3.en.67 Finally, some news from the Philippines

Daryl and Philline are surely having a great time and have not sent us any news. Finally, better late than never, Philline sent us a virtual postcard from Borocay. I copy it and paste it here.

Check in Google map the location of Borocay.

Hello 🙂
Sorry that I couldnt write the diary the last weeks, I was too busy. This is the diary of the last week.

Thursday – Saturday
– I went to Boracay, a very tourist island because of the beaches. Most of them are from China, Japan and Korea. Before that, our flight was delayed two hours because the air traffic.

Sunday.
– My whole family went to Subic is a ex American military base that now is also a touristic place with its zoo, tree adventure and beach. it took two hours by car by the highway with a lot of toll gates.

  • Do you know what “toll” is?
  • What do you think of the landscape?

Philline must tell us everything about her trip wehn she comes back. I guess that, after watching the pic she sent, we can understand why she has not sent any entries to the blog.

Have a good time, Philline , and relax because on coming back you’ll have some work to  catch up on!

Regards from your hardworking 2nd ESO E classmates and teachers.

Daryl.… No news from him. Where is he? Has he forgotten us?

No news from some old classmates who are far away. What about Lucas? He might visit our blog from time to time. Let’s see if he sends a joke or  a virtual postcard.

3.en.66 Renaissance Man: Learn while singing in English

With Vicent,  in your History Lessons, you are currently working on the Renaissance, so you are familiar with some of the most emblematic figures and artworks of this period. In English lessons we are used to sing along, aren’t we?

Historyteachers channel in You Tube aims at making learning history fun. Do you think they achieve it?

Try to identify the artworks, philosophers, writers and artists you had learnt about in your History lessons. The music is by a band called the violent femmes

Here you can see another video about Reanaissance painters with some comments written in English.

  • Which of the two videos did you like best?

Homework: You have a week to sort out the lyrics of the Violent femmes video. You know how we do it. Each person in the class must contribute. Write a sentence to the blog. Then, the next person must continue writing where the previous student left it. Hurry up! the sooner you do it, the easier.

3.en.65 India: The caste system

In this American site, which is the source I have chosen to introduce the caste system, you will find a very good  overview of world religions. If you look at Hinduism, you will understand the origin of the caste system.

This diagram shows the classes of the Hindu caste system in India with Brahmins being at the top.

Caste System
The Caste System is a rigid class structure based on Hinduism which is found in India. It is believed that if one leads a good life, following good karma and dharma, then they will be rewarded by being reincarnated as a person belonging to the next highest level in the Caste System. However, if one is wicked during their life, they will be demoted, and possibly even removed from the Caste System altogether. Outcasts, or Untouchables, are members of Hindu society thought to have been removed from the Caste System, with no hope of returning to it, due to their misdeeds in previous lives. Work that is deemed unclean for all other Hindus is reserved for these Outcasts. After winning its independence from Great Britain in 1947, India adopted a national constitution which stated that “Untouchability is abolished and its practice in any form is forbidden.” Since that time many Caste reforms have been enacted to diminish discriminatory practices in India. Today, the Caste System still exists in practice, despite the many laws designed to legally abolish it.

Watch these videos and identify the different castes

3.en.64 Wars: “We want Peace” campaign

With Emili, you are working on current issues and learning to understand the news. You need to be aware of some words that, unfortunately, keep on making the headlines: war, genocide, Rwanda, Darfur.

This song by Emmanuel Jal, has turned to be a hit. Emmanuel Jal is a singer who has a personal story connected with war, child soldiers and violence.

This year we went to see two talks by Ramón Lobo and Chema Caballero. They introduced you to the porblem of children soldiers. Emmanuel Jal was a child soldier in the past. Read his story in Wikipedia and answer these questions.

  1. Where was he born?
  2. What  do you know about his country?
  3. What happened to his parents?
  4. Which organisation recruited him and trained him to kill Muslims?
  5. How many years did he fight?
  6. What happened when he was eleven years old?
  7. How did he manage to overcome his past?
  8. What does he want his music  for?
  9. What kind of organisations is he active in?
  10. Had you heard of him before? Did you know anything about his activism?

Now visit We want PEACE web site:

What do they campaign for?

What can you do to contribute?

Listen to the official song

  • Here you have the lyrics so you can sing along.
  • Are there any words or expressions you do not understand?
  • Check the words I highlighted in green and make sure you understand them.

Oh yeah
Oh yeah
I’m looking for some people who’s looking for peace
Maybe together we could make the war cease
Now we can send mankind to the moon
And we can reach to the bottom of the sea
That’s why it really kind of baffles me
That we cannot end wars and bring peace
And we cannot change the way people act
And we cannot change the way people think
So if we sit back, chill out and relax
Civilization will soon be extinct
That’s why I am

[Chorus]
>I am calling on
I’m calling on the whole wide world
>On the whole wide world
Come on people would you help me
>Help me scream and shout
Let’s scream and shout coz we want peace
>That we want peace
To say the least

I dedicate this song to the common people
Caught in the middle of this common evil
I wish the world was a little bit fairer
Time we start looking at the man in the mirror
Fear is the devil’s policeman
Fear made good Germans side with Hitler so he can
Build the war of genocide and havoc was wreaking
Silence of the lamb ’cause nobody was speaking
That’s why I am

[Chorus]

Somebody said, “After Rwanda
>Never again,”
And after Rwanda
>It’s happening
Not far from Rwanda
>Just next door
Who’s gonna shout for the poor people living in Darfur?
The world’s gone deaf
The world’s gone blind
The world’s busy sitting down on their behind
Nobody cares about the poor and needy
Too busy sucking up to the rich and greedy
For every hero there is villain
I ain’t kidding
We gonna shout out standing up or sitting
One more time?
We got no more time!
We got to figure out the way we could all combine
Hey!
Like Jericho the walls came tumbling down
The sound of voices had the city surround
You know what is worth
Time to put our voices to work
We got to shake down heaven and earth
That’s why I am

[Chorus]

Come on everybody, come on
Stand up, stand up, stand up
You want peace and I want peace
Stand up, stand up
You want peace and I want peace
Stand up, stand up
You want peace and I want peace
Stand up… [continued]

A group of school kids, about your age, were given the chance to interview him. Watch the interview on the BBC.

What are the questions they ask him?

You also had the chance to interview people who had been in touch with child soldiers.

  • Do you think these type of interviews help people raise awareness on world conflicts?
  • This is the trailer of a film about his life “War child” . Would you like to see it?

Post your comments to the blog for Thursday the 31st.

3.en.63 Xilin’s acrostic the first one to arrive and a rap to inspire you

The first acrostic to reach the blog was Xilin’s. So he deserves the award. Congratulations to him!

XILIN’S ACROSTIC:
When you clean the teeth, turn off the tap.
Another tip, is clean the fruits and the vegetables in a bowl.
Take a shower instead of a bath.
Everybody must take shorter showers.
Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full.

Xilin’s Acrostic does not rhyme, does it?

What about rhythm? Try to read it aloud.

In English scoohols most kids have tried to use this rap by Michael Rosen, a poet who writes poetry for kids, and adapt it. Writing variations of this rap can be fun. Let’s see what you think of it. Look at these two different videos. The first one has no music and the second one is a musical parody of Michael Rosen’s rap.

Look at the lyrics, and notice the 10 verbs in past tense. Will  you give it a try and make your own version? You can do it in groups and work out a coreography to present it to the class.

Do you like the way he does it?

What about Jay Sean’s version?

THE MICHAEL ROSEN RAP

You may think I’m happy, you may hink I’m sad,
You may think I’m crazy, you may think I’m mad,
But hang on to your seats and listen right here
I’m gonna tell you little something that will burn your ear.

Hip, hop
A hip, hop, hap
I’m giving you all the
Michael Rosen Rap
Hip, hop
A hip, hop, hap
I’m giving you all
the Michael Rosen Rap

I was born on the 7th of May
I remember very well that awful day
I was in my mother, curled up tight
Though I have to say it was as dark as night.
Nothing to do, didn’t want to breathe,
I was so happy didn’t want to leave

Then I heard some people give a shout:
“One push, Mrs
. Rosen, and he‘ll be  out!”
I’m tellin’ you all that was a puzzle to me–
I shouted out–
“How’d you know I’m a “
he”?
The doctor shouted–
“Good Lord,
he can talk!”
I popped out my head and said,
“Watch me walk.”
I juked and jived around that room,
Balam bam boola, balam de ditty boom

(Repeat chorus)

When I was one, I swam the English Channel
When I was two, I
ate a soapy flannel
When I was three, I started getting thinner
When I was four, I
ate the dog’s dinner,
When I was five, I
was in a band playing drums
When I was six, I ate a bag of plums
When I was seven, I robbed a bank with my sister
When I was eight, I
became Prime Minister
When I was nine, I closed all the schools
When I was ten, they made me
King of the Fools.

So that’s what I am, that’s what I’ll be
With
an M, with an I, with a K, with an E.
That’s what I am, that’s what I’ll be
Mr. Mike, Mr. Michael, Mr. Rosen, Mr. Me

A hip, hop, hap
I’m giving you all the
Michael Rosen Rap

Post your comments to the blog for Thursday the 31st.
