2.en.54 Exam: 22nd February

Exam.

Today you did the exam of the latest posts that had appeared in the blog.  Here follow some instructions about self-correcting what you did in class.

  • Question V has to be completed at home as you did not have enough time to answer all the questions in one hour.
  • Answer all the questions again and copy your answers in your notebook.
  • Every student will be responsible for uploading the answer of one of the exam questions to the blog.
  • Remember to mention the post where you had to look for the answer, this way you will be aware of the importance of the blog as a study tool.
  • Check spelling and accuracy, you have all the necessary tools  (dictionaries, websites, blog, Google group to ask your classmates) and all the time you need, so I expect accurate answers.
  • Remember not to “cut and paste” from Wikipedia. Correcting an exam is part of learning, not a mechanical activity.

2.en.53 in England “it” rains more than in Spain.. but in Spain the rain stays mainly in the plain, doesn’t it?

It is raining cats and dogs

This winter has been particularly cold in Sweden, it snowed in  late October

does it rain very often in Majorca during summer?

With Emili and Magdalena you are learning lots of syntax, that’s good, I will not need to explain to you what subject and predicate are, neither transitive or intransitive verbs, in fact it is the same in English. However, there are differences among languages you need to be aware of.

In English, “weather verbs” rain, snow, NEED A SUBJECT.

We use “it”

Are you familiar with  the song “The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain” Have you seen the old musical “My Fair Lady”?

I will tell you about it some other time. With a little bit of effort you can achieve a perfect English pronunciation, just as Eliza does after a crash course on phonetics by professor  Higgins.

In this video you will see how happy they are after she manages to pronounce the sentence correctly.

By the way, you have been correcting spelling mistakes in “Boy”, you did very well at spotting mistakes. Spelling mistakes were often made because some words  were pronounced the same and spelled differently: “hair/hare”

plane/plain are one of those pairs you should not confuse.

Notice how Professor Higgins repeats the question without forgetting the “it”

“Where does it rain?” “Where does it rain?”

Sing along!

  1. Do you know the name of the play My Fair Lady was based on?
  2. Have you seen the film by Julie Andrews?
  3. Do you remember the Photographic Exhibition by Lartigue we went to see at La Caixa? Do you remember I told you some of the photos of elegant women wearing hats had inspired the costumes of My Fair Lady musical?
  4. Did you like the video?
  5. What does soggy mean?
  6. What do you think of the “Spanish” dance?

Post your answers to the blog

2.en.52 Reliable, logical, cynical, responsible… and some pronunciation work

Last Tuesday you took part in an interactive drama workshop at La Caixa. Part of your task was to discuss the way the characters of the play felt and analyse their reactions. There was conflict and lack of understanding between Rosa and her mother, but there was also conflict between Rosa and Judit who were of the same age.

  1. Do you think there are certain attitudes and personality features that go hand in hand with being young?
  2. Do people’s personality necessarily change as they grow old?
  3. Can grown ups change their attitudes?
  4. Is it more difficult to change when you are young or old?
  5. Did you like the play?
  6. What about the ending?
  7. What happened after Rosa’s mom received the phone call? Use your imagination. At the bottom of this post you will find some more adjectives to describe how the ending made you feel.

In this song you’ll be able to practice the pronunciation of some adjectives with similar endings:

_ble; -al

You will also learn the role of adverbs

but you will also need to reflect on how certain stages of life are associated with certain moods and feelings.

Listen to this Supertramp song “logical” and do the activities.

1. Me cansan tus mentiras
2. Me gusta la horchata
